We present here a publication to accompany the exhibition of Wladyslaw Strzeminski's work, organized by the Muzeum Sztuki (Museum of Art) in Lodz on the 1OOth anniversary of the artist's birth, presented in our rooms at the turn of the years 1993 and 1994, before we show it in other museums of the world. Our exhibition is part of a celebration of the 1OOth anniversary of the birth of an artist who was the creator of the theory of Unism and a co-founder of the Muzeum Sztuki in Lodz, but the exhibition is also accompanied by numerous publications as well as by other scientific, educational, film, and musical events. It would not have been possible to prepare if not for the support, help, goodwill and imagination of very many people and institutions amongst which I would first of all like to mention the members of the Honorary Committee for Celebrating the 1OOth Anniversary of Wladyslaw Strzeminski's Birth. I would like to thank them for joining the Committee, for devoting their time to preparing the celebration and for their advice and often practical help in realizing our project.

I would like to thank the Directors and the Curators of the following collections for allowing us to borrow works by Wladyslaw Strzeminski, and also for allowing access to information, photography and other materials which enrich our exhibition in such a significant way. These collections are: Fondazione Marguerite Arp in Locarno, Gosudarstvennyj Russkij Muzej in Saint Petersburg, Yad Vashem Institute in Jerusalem, National Museum in Krakow, National Museum in Poznan, National Museum in Szczecin, National Museum in Warsaw, Staatsgalerie Stuttgart, Staatsgalerie Stuttgart-Graphische Sammlung.

I would like to thank the Directors and Curators of the following museums who supplied information on works by Wladyslaw Strzeminski in their possession and also offered their reproductions. I ask Professor Yve-Alain Bois from Harvard University, Cambridge, Mass., to accept my gratitude for his effort in organizing an American venue for our exhibition after its presentation in Europe.

I would like to thank Ms Nika Strzeminska, Professor Andrzej Turo- wski from Universite de Bourgogne in Dijon, and our Curators Ms Janina Ladnowska and Ms Zenobia Karnicka for writing the texts and preparing a full study for the catalogue.

I wish to express my gratitude for the whole Muzeum Sztuki team engaged in preparing our undertaking, and in particular Ms Janina Ladnowska and Ms Zenobia Karnicka the Exhibition Commissars, as well as Ms Jadwiga Janik, the Muzeum Sztuki Curator responsible for the co-ordination and editing of all publications, including the editing of reprints of Strzeminski's texts. Ms Zenobia Karnicka is also the author of the first complete catalogue of Wladyslaw Strzeminski's works as well as his biography and a complete list of his works exhibitions. In her work she has partly made use of an earlier catalogue study of the artist's work prepared by Zofia Baranowicz. I also thank Ms Katarzyna Jasinska and Ms Agnieszka Skalska from Muzeum Sztuki for their part in realizing our undertaking.

I owe my gratitude to Mr Ryszard Stanislawski - former Director of the Muzeum Sztuki for many years who played the greatest role in exhibiting and bringing to the world the work and ideas of Wladyslaw Strzeminski - for his advice in completing our complex project. I thank Mr Jozef Robakowski for his co- operation in realizing the film Wladyslaw Strzeminski, To Construct a Seeing, co- produced by Polish Television and the Muzeum Sztuki in Lodz.

I am grateful to Mr Zygmunt Krauze, composer of Unistic music corresponding to the theory of Unism in painting,for the musical accents of our project, and in particular for composing a piece for the occasion of the artist's anniversary.
