VIII. Works ascribed to Wladyslaw Strzeminski

The works grouped under this heading have been included in this section for two basic reasons. First, because of doubts about W. Strzeminski's authorship. This group includes: works whose technique is exceptional in the artist's output; works from the earliest period of his artistic activity, for which there is now no available material for comparison; and works whose signatures differ from the ones classified thus far. Secondly, for obvious reasons this section contains works not known from personal inspection (some are only known from illustrations), including those discovered during the work on this catalogue. These will undoubtedly undergo research presently. It should be stressed, that all the works in this section are interesting for many reasons. There are grounds to suppose that some of them may have been made by the artist's pupi1s from the 1930's. They would then be the results of Strzeminski's didactic program, in which - as we know - he encouraged his pupils to make studies of his own works. They may also have been made by other artists remaining under his direct influence. The work that seems particularly interesting is the Seascape from the Muzeum Narodowe in Cracow, which was probably painted by Katarzyna Kobro. This attribution is suggested by the comparison with a composition on the same subject in the collection of Strzeminski and Kobro's daughter, which after long research has been attributed to K. Kobro.
